ABSTRACT

El grafeno y sus derivados son muy utilizados en ciencia y tecnología por los beneficios que otorgan sus propiedades fisicoquímicas. En el área de la salud en particular, se destacan sus propiedades biológicas debido a su elevada biocompatibilidad, interacción celular y su actividad antibacteriana. La incorporación de grafeno en ciertos materiales permite obtener un material combinado con propiedades mejoradas. Un ejemplo de ello es la incorporación industrial de óxido de grafeno en metacrilato de metilo para generar un polímero (PMMA) mejorado, no solo desde el punto de vista mecánico, sino también una notoria ventaja en la respuesta biológica de los tejidos blandos. Este artículo describe el caso clínico de un paciente de 70 años, que concurrió a la consulta buscando alternativas de tratamiento para mejorar la retención y estabilidad de las prótesis para optimizar la función masticatoria, una alternativa que impacte positivamente sobre su calidad de vida. El plan de tratamiento contempló el reemplazo de las prótesis removibles por prótesis híbridas en ambos maxilares, confeccionadas con PMMA modificado industrialmente con óxido de grafeno, previa colocación de cinco implantes en cada arco (AU)


Graphene and its derivatives are widely used in science and technology due to the benefits provided by their physicochemical properties. In the health area, specifically, its biological properties stand out, due to its high biocompatibility, cellular interaction, and its antibacterial activity. The incorporation of graphene in certain materials allows obtaining a combined material with improved properties. An example of this is the industrial incorporation of graphene oxide in methyl methacrylate, to generate an improved polymer (PMMA), not only from a mechanical point of view, but also a notable advantage in the biological response of soft tissues. This article describes the clinical case of a 70-year-old patient, who attended the consultation looking for treatment alternatives to improve the retention and stability of the prostheses to optimize the masticatory function, or an alternative that had a positive impact on their quality of lifetime. The treatment plan contemplated the replacement of removable prostheses with hybrid prostheses in both jaws, made with PMMA industrially modified with graphene oxide, after placing five implants in each arch (AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare selective physical-mechanical properties, antibacterial effects and cytotoxicity of seven temporary restorative materials (TRM): five resin-based materials [Bioplic (B), Fill Magic Tempo (FM), Fermit inlay (F), Luxatemp LC (L) and Revotek LC (R)], and zinc oxide-eugenol cement (IRM) and glass ionomer cement (GIC) as the controls. Material and methods The physical-mechanical properties were evaluated by determining microleakage (ML), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Shore D hardness (SDH). In addition, the polymerization rate (Pr-1), depth of cure (DC), water sorption and solubility (WS/SL) were evaluated. The antimicrobial effects of the materials were assessed by biofilm accumulation of Streptococcus mutans (BT) and the direct contact test (DCT) by exposure to Enterococcus faecalis for 1 and 24 h, and cytotoxicity by MTT assay. The data were analyzed by ANOVA or Kruskall-Wallis tests, and a complementary post-hoc method (p<0.05). Results Group B, followed by FM and GIC had significantly lower percentages of microleakage in comparison with the other groups; Groups FM and L showed the highest WS, while Groups R and FM showed the significantly lowest SL values (p<0.05). Group R showed the statistically highest UTS mean and the lowest DC mean among all groups. Group F showed the lowest S. mutans biofilm accumulation (p=0.023). Only the Group L showed continued effect against E. faecalis after 1 h and 24 h in DCT. The L showed statistically lower viability cell when compared to the other groups. Conclusions These findings suggest the antibacterial effect of the temporary materials Fill Magic and Bioplic against S. mutans, while Luxatemp showed in vitro inhibition of S. mutans biofilm accumulation and E. faecalis growth. Regarding the cell viability test, Luxatemp was the most cytotoxic and Fill Magic was shown to be the least cytotoxic.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the adhesive resistance of metallic brackets bonded to temporary crowns made of acrylic resin after different surface treatments. METHODS: 180 specimens were made of Duralay and randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 30) according to surface treatment and bonding material: G1 - surface roughening with Soflex and bonding with Duralay; G2 - roughening with aluminum oxide blasting and bonding with Duralay; G3 - application of monomer and bonding with Duralay; G4 - roughening with Soflex and bonding with Transbond XT; G5 - roughening with aluminum oxide blasting and bonding with Transbond XT and G6: application of monomer and bonding with Transbond. The results were statistically assessed by ANOVA/Games-Howell. RESULTS: The means (MPa) were: G1= 18.04, G2= 22.64, G3= 22.4, G4= 9.71, G5= 11.23, G6= 9.67. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) ranged between 2 and 3 on G1, G2 and G3 whereas in G4, G5 and G6 it ranged from 0 to 1, showing that only the material affects the pattern of adhesive flaw. CONCLUSION: The surface treatment and the material influenced adhesive resistance of brackets bonded to temporary crowns. Roughening by aluminum blasting increased bond strength when compared to Soflex, in the group bonded with Duralay. The bond strength of Duralay acrylic resin was superior to that of Transbond XT composite resin.


OBJETIVO: avaliar a resistência adesiva de braquetes metálicos colados a coroas provisórias confeccionadas em resina acrílica após diferentes tratamentos de superfície. MÉTODOS: cento e oitenta corpos de prova foram confeccionados em Duralay e divididos aleatoriamente em seis grupos (n = 30), de acordo com tratamento de superfície e material de colagem: grupo 1, asperização da superfície com Soflex e colagem com Duralay; grupo 2, asperização com jato de óxido de alumínio e colagem com Duralay; grupo 3, aplicação de monômero e colagem com Duralay; grupo 4, asperização com Soflex e colagem com Transbond XT; grupo 5, asperização com jato de óxido de alumínio e colagem com Transbond XT; e grupo 6, aplicação de monômero e colagem com Transbond. Os resultados foram tratados estatisticamente pela ANOVA e pelo teste de Games-Howell. RESULTADOS: as médias (MPa) foram: grupo 1 - 18,04; grupo 2 - 22,64; grupo 3 - 22,4; grupo 4 - 9,71; grupo 5 - 11,23; grupo 6 - 9,67. O índice de remanescente adesivo (ARI) variou entre 2 e 3 nos grupos 1, 2 e 3. Já nos grupos 4, 5 e 6, variou entre 0 e 1, demonstrando que apenas o material influencia o padrão de falha adesiva. CONCLUSÃO: o tratamento de superfície e o material influenciaram a resistência adesiva dos braquetes colados à coroas provisórias. A asperização por jato de óxido de alumínio elevou a resistência de união quando comparada ao Soflex, no grupo colado com Duralay. A resistência adesiva da resina acrílica Duralay foi superior à da resina composta Transbond XT.

ABSTRACT

Background: Traditionally, inlay casting waxes have been used to fabricate patterns for castings. Newer resin pattern materials offer greater rigidity and strength, allowing easier laboratory and intraoral adjustment without the fear of pattern damage. They also claim to possess a greater dimensional stability when compared to inlay wax. Aims: This study attempted to determine and compare the marginal accuracy of patterns fabricated from an inlay casting wax, an autopolymerized pattern resin and a light polymerized pattern resin on storage off the die for varying time intervals. Materials and Methods: Ten patterns each were fabricated from an inlay casting wax (GC Corp., Tokyo, Japan), an autopolymerized resin pattern material (Pattern resin, GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan) and a light-cured resin pattern material (Palavit GLC, Hereaus Kulzer GmbH, Germany). The completed patterns were stored off the die at room temperature. Marginal gaps were evaluated by reseating the patterns on their respective dies and observing it under a stereomicroscope at 1, 12, and 24 h intervals after pattern fabrication. Results: The results revealed that the inlay wax showed a significantly greater marginal discrepancy at the 12 and 24 h intervals. The autopolymerized resin showed an initial (at 1 h) marginal discrepancy slightly greater than inlay wax, but showed a significantly less marginal gap (as compared to inlay wax) at the other two time intervals. The light-cured resin proved to be significantly more dimensionally stable, and showed minimal change during the storage period. Conclusion: The resin pattern materials studied, undergo a significantly less dimensional change than the inlay waxes on prolonged storage. They would possibly be a better alternative to inlay wax in situations requiring high precision or when delayed investment (more than 1 h) of patterns can be expected.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To assess the effect of simulated mouth conditions reproduced with thermocycling on the tensile bond strength of two silicone based resilient denture liners with acrylic resin bases. Materials and Methods: Two silicone-based soft denture liners (Mollosil - Chairside autopolymerization and Molloplast B - Heat polymerization) were tested. For each liner, 30 specimens with a cross-sectional area of 10 Χ 10 mm and thickness 3 mm were processed between two acrylic blocks (Trevalon). Specimens were divided into a control group that was stored for 24 hours in water at 37°C and a test group that was thermocycled (2500 cycles) between baths of 5° and 55°C. Tensile bond strength (kg/cm 2 ) was determined in a universal testing machine using crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Statistical Analysis Used: The student t-test was used to determine the significance of the difference in bond strength between the two liners. Results: The mean tensile bond strength for control and thermocycled specimens of the two liners were: Mollosil (6.82 kg/cm 2 and 8.41 kg/cm 2 ) and Molloplast-B (16.30 kg/cm 2 and 13.67 kg/cm 2 ), respectively. Comparison of bond strength of control specimens with thermocycled specimens of the liners indicated a significant difference for both Mollosil (P=0.045) and Molloplast-B (P=0.027). Comparison between control specimens of both liners and thermocycled specimens of both liners indicated a highly significant difference (P<0.001). Conclusions: Heat polymerized resilient denture liner Molloplast-B had higher tensile bond strength than autopolymerizing liner Mollosil regardless of thermocycling. The bond strength of Mollosil increased after thermocycling while that of Molloplast-B decreased after thermocycling. Clinical Implications: Although heat-polymerized denture liners require more processing time than autopolymerizing liners, but they display much better adhesion properties to denture base resin and should thus be preferred when soft liner has to be used for a longer duration of time.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the flexural bond strength of porcelain to combinations of used and new nickel-chromium alloy in various proportions. Materials and Methods: Used and new nickel-chromium bonding alloys were combined in various proportions (groups I to V; 10 samples per group) and their flexural bond strengths with porcelain were compared. A three-point loading system was used for the application of load. Load was applied at a constant speed of 0.5 mm/minute and the load required to fracture the porcelain was recorded for each specimen. Statistical Analysis Used: (a) Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and (b) Duncan's multiple range tests. Results: The best bond strength values were seen when 100% new alloy was used. According to the findings of this study, there was no adverse effects noted with up to 75% recast metal, but serious changes were found in the bond strength values when 100% old metal was used. Conclusions: The following conclusions were drawn from the study Fresh nickel-chromium alloy shows the greatest porcelain adherence. There is no significant change in bond strength of ceramic to alloy with up to 75% of used nickel-chromium alloy. At least 25%- of new alloy should be added when recycled nickel-chromium alloy is being used for metal ceramic restorations.

ABSTRACT

Context : The presence of Candida albicans on the fitting surface of the denture is a major causative factor in denture stomatits. A treatment method is by combining tissue conditioner and antifungal agents. Aims : The main objective of this study is to test the efficacy of magnesium oxide combined with two tissue conditioners (Viscogel and GC Soft), in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. Settings and Design : Microbiological study was done in the Department of Microbiology, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University, Mangalore. Materials and Methods : A total of 154 plates were prepared using Muller Hilton with Glucose and Methylene Blue dye medium and inoculated with 24-hr old standard Candida culture. Plates were divided into control and combination. Test discs with different concentrations of MgO were equidistantly placed in MgO Control, while sterile discs embedded with respective tissue conditioner were equidistantly placed in Viscogel and GC Soft controls. For combination groups, the tissue conditioners were mixed and the discs with MgO (1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) were embedded in the mix. After 24 h of incubation, inhibition diameters were noted. Statistical Analysis Used : The data was analysed using Mann Whitney U Test, ANOVA, Tukey HSD test. Results : The inhibition effect of magnesium oxide 1% combined with tissue conditioners (VGC and GCC) is not significant in both the groups. The inhibition effect of MgO 5% and 7% combined with tissue conditioners (VGC and GCC) is very highly significant ( P < 0.001). Conclusions : Magnesium oxide in combination with tissue conditioners are effective against Candida albicans; GC soft with magnesium oxide showed a better result than Viscogel with magnesium oxide; Increasing the concentration of magnesium oxide increases the zone of inhibition of Candida albicans.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of disinfectant procedures on the dimensional stability and surface quality of a tissue conditioner used as a functional impression material. Materials and Methods: A tissue conditioner (Visco-gel) used as a functional impression material was disinfected by immersion in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite or 2% glutaraldehyde solutions for 10 or 20 minutes, respectively. The control group consisted of specimens (n=10) that were not treated by disinfectants. For testing the dimensional stability, impressions of an aluminum edentulous arch with three reference points were made. After 24 hours of storage in distilled water, the specimens were treated by one of the disinfection procedures. Impressions were poured and, subsequently, 50 stone casts were measured with a Nikon profile projector. For surface roughness evaluation, disks that contained Visco-gel were pressed against glass slides. The disks were then stored in distilled water for 24 hours. After disinfection, 50 disk-shaped dental stone casts were prepared. Surface roughness values were determined using a profilometer. For each test, data were subjected to two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results: The results of the dimensional stability test showed that immersion of Visco-gel impressions in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution or 2% glutaraldehyde solution did not significantly change the anteroposterior (AP) and cross-arch (CA) distances of the resultant stone casts when compared to the control group (P>0.05). The surface quality of dental stone casts formed by Visco-gel did not change significantly when impressions were immersed in the disinfectant solutions for either 10 or 20 minutes, or when stored in distilled water (P>0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that the disinfectant solutions used in this study did not have a significant effect on the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of Visco-gel as a functional impression material.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effects of the cement type and the water storage time on the push-out bond strength of a glass fiber post. Glass fiber posts (Fibrekor, Jeneric Pentron) were luted to post spaces using a self-cured resin cement (C&B Cement [CB]), a glass ionomer cement (Ketac Cem [KC]) or a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (GC FujiCEM [FC]) according to the manufacturers’ instructions. For each luting agent, the specimens were exposed to one of the following water storage times (n=5): 1 day (T1), 7 days (T7), 90 days (T90) and 180 days (T180). Push-out tests were performed after the storage times. Control specimens were not exposed to water storage, but subjected to the push-out test 10 min after post cementation. Data (in MPa) were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn`s test (α=0.05). Cement type and water storage time had a significant effect (p<0.05) on the push-out bond strength. CB showed significantly higher values of retention (p<0.05) than KC and FC, irrespective of the water storage time. Water storage increased significantly the push-out bond strength in T7 and T90, regardless of the cement type (p<0.05). The results showed that fiber posts luted to post spaces with the self-cured resin cement exhibited the best bonding performance throughout the 180-day water storage period. All cements exhibited a tendency to increase the bond strength after 7 and 90 days of water storage, decreasing thereafter.


Este estudo investigou os efeitos do tipo de cimento e do tempo de armazenamento em água na resistência adesiva ao cisalhamento de pinos de fibra. Pinos de fibra de vidro (Fibrekor, JenericPentron) foram cimentados aos condutos radiculares usando o cimento resinoso autopolimerizável (C&B Cement [CB]), o cimento de ionômero de vidro (Ketac Cem [KC]) ou o cimento de ionômero de vidro modificado por resina (GC FujiCEM [FC]) de acordo com as instruções dos fabricantes. Para cada cimento, os espécimes foram expostos a um dos seguintes tempos de armazenamento em água (n=5): 1 dia (T1), 7 dias (T7), 90 dias (T90) e 180 dias (T180). Os testes de resistência adesiva ao cisalhamento foram realizados após os períodos de armazenamento. Os espécimes controles não foram expostos ao armazenamento em água, mas submetidos ao teste de resistência adesiva ao cisalhamento 10 min após a cimentação do pino. Os dados (MPa) foram analisados usando Kruskal-Wallis e teste de Dunn (α=0,05). O tipo de cimento e o tempo de armazenamento em água afetaram significantemente a resistência adesiva ao cisalhamento (p<0,05). CB apresentou valores de retenção significantemente superiores a KC e FC, independentemente do tempo de armazenamento em água. Esse, por sua vez, aumentou significantemente a resistência adesiva ao cisalhamento em T7 e T90, independentemente do tipo de cimento (p<0,05). Os resultados indicaram que os pinos de fibra cimentados aos condutos radiculares com o cimento resinoso autopolimerizável apresentou a melhor performance adesiva durante todo o período de armazenamento em água de 180 dias. Todos os cimentos apresentaram uma tendência a aumentar a resistência adesiva ao cisalhamento após 7 e 90 dias de armazenamento em água, diminuindo posteriormente.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of eugenolcontaining endodontic sealers and luting strategy on the pull-out bond strength of glass fiber posts to dentin. Sixty-four bovine incisors were randomly assigned into two groups of 32 specimens each for obturation procedure with gutta-percha only, or with Pulp Canal Sealer EWT. Subsequently, the roots were prepared for the fiber post Reforpost and all specimens of each endodontic sealing procedure were allocated to four groups (n=8), according to the strategies for post cementation: A) Single Bond 2 and RelyX ARC; B) All Bond 2 and C&B cement; C) All Bond 2 and RelyX ARC; D) Single Bond 2 and C&B Cement. The posts were cemented immediately after the endodontic treatment. The pull-out test was performed at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/min in a universal testing machine (EMIC). Data (Kgf) were submitted to a two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05). The eugenol-based sealer did not influence the pull-out bond strength of fiber posts regardless of the luting strategy. RelyX ARC showed higher bond strength than C&B Cement when used with Single Bond 2 adhesive system, when the eugenol-based sealer was present. All Bond 2, when associated to all cements studied, promoted similar bond strength, regardless of the eugenol-containing endodontic sealer. In conclusion, eugenolcontaining sealer did not influence the pull-out bond strength values of the resin luting systems for glass fiber post cementation. The bond system and resin cement association from the same manufacturer had similar bond strength values for dentin.


O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a influencia de cimentos endodonticos a base de eugenol e estrategia de cimentacao resinosa na resistencia a tracao de pinos de fibra de vidro a dentina. Sessenta e quatro incisivos bovinos foram aleatoriamente divididos em dois grupos com 32 especimes para cada procedimento de obturacao, com o cimento a base de eugenol Pulp Canal Sealer EWT ou somente com guta percha pela tecnica termoplastificada. Apos, realizou-se o prepare do conduto radicular para o pino de fibra Reforpost e posteriormente, as amostras de cada procedimento obturador foram separadas em quarto grupos (n=8), considerando as estrategias para cimentacao do pino: A) Adper Single Bond 2 e RelyX ARC; B) All Bond 2 e C&B cement; C) All Bond 2 e RelyX ARC; D) Adper Single Bond 2 e C&B Cement. Os pinos foram imediatamente cimentados apos o tratamento endodontico. Dessa maneira, o teste de pull-out foi realizado a uma velocidade de 0.5 mm/min em maquina de ensaio universal (EMIC DL2000). Os dados (Kgf) A analise estatistica foi realizada pelos testes ANOVA de dois fatores e teste de Tukey (p ≤ 0.05). O cimento endodontico contend eugenol nao influenciou a resistencia de uniao a tracao (pull-out) dos pinos de fibra, independente da estrategia de cimentacao. O RelyX ARC ofereceu maior resistencia de uniao do pino a dentina, comparado ao C&B Cement quanto utilizado com o Adper Single Bond 2, na presenca do cimento endodontico contendo eugenol. O All Bond 2 quando associado a todos os cimentos estudados promoveram uma resistencia de uniao semelhante, independente do conteudo de eugenol na cimentacao endodontica. Em conclusao, o cimento endodontico a base de eugenol nao influenciou na resistencia a tracao de pinos de fibra a dentina. A associacao de sistema adesivo e cimento resinoso do mesmo fabricante apresentou valores de resistencia de uniao semelhantes na cimentacao de pinos de fibra.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate the effects of two different surface treatments and bonding agents on tensile bond strength between a Co-Cr and a Ni-Cr cast alloy and two resin-luting cements. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and forty alloy samples were cast and subjected to surface treatments such as sandblasting, chemical etching, and sandblasting plus chemical etching. Panavia F and CandB cement were used as cementing mediums. The etching qualities were examined by a stereooptic microscope. Failure surfaces were examined throughout scanning electron microscopy. The data were evaluated using statistical methods, namely analysis of variance and multiple comparison test (Tukey HSD). Results: Significant differences were found in the bonding provided by the various cements (P < 0.001) and also type of surface treatments (P < 0.001). For all groups, sandblasted surfaces showed the highest bond strength values. There was no significant difference between the Cr-Co and the Cr-Ni alloys (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Panavia F showed higher tensile strength and the sandblasted samples possessed higher tensile strength.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiopacity of 5 root-end filling materials (white MTA-Angelus, grey MTA-Angelus, IRM, Super EBA and Sealer 26). Five specimens (10 mm diameter X 1 mm thickness) were made from each material and radiographed next to an aluminum stepwedge varying in thickness from 2 to 16 mm. Radiographs were digitized and the radiopacity of the materials was compared to that of the aluminum stepwedge using VIXWIN 2000 software in millimeters of aluminum (mm Al). Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test at 5% significance level. Radiopacity values varied from 3 mm Al to 5.9 mm Al. Sealer 26 and IRM presented the highest radiopacity values (p<0.05), while white/grey MTA and Super EBA presented the lowest radiopacity values (p<0.05). The tested root-end filling materials presented different radiopacities, white/grey MTA and Super EBA being the least radiopaque materials.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the respective dies after polyether elastomeric procedure in the presence or absence of cervical contact of the acrylic resin shell with the cervical region, establishing a comparison to dies obtained with stock trays. This study consisted of three groups with 10 specimens each: 1) acrylic copings without cervical contact, (cn); 2) acrylic copings with cervical contact (cc); 3) perforated stock tray, (st). The accuracy of the resulting dies was verified with the aid of a master crown, precisely fit to the master steel die. ANOVA test found statistically significant differences among groups (p<0.001). Tukey's test found that the smallest discrepancy occurred in group cn, followed by cc, while the st group presented the highest difference (cc x cn: p=0.007; st x cn: p<0.001; st x cc: p<0.001).

ABSTRACT

Cinco combinações de materiais comumente utilizados para registros intermaxilares em casos de extremidades livres bilaterais foram avaliados: base de resina acrílica + cera; base de resina acrílica + pasta zincoenólica; base de resina acrílica + cera + resina Duralay; silicona de condensação; e placa de resina acrílica + hidrocolóide irreversível. Foi realizada a medida da distância vertical entre pontos referenciais em 6 regiões nas bases dos modelos articulados. As medidas obtidas com a articulação manual dos modelos foram tomadas como padrão de comparação para as medidas obtidas com os materiais testados. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise estatística por meio de análise de variância e teste de Tukey. Houve diferença estatisticamente significante (p<0.05) entre a silicona de condensação e a combinação da base de resina acrílica + cera, porém entre os demais materiais não houve diferença estatisticamente significante. A silicona de condensação apresentou as maiores diferenças em relação às medidas obtidas pela articulação manual dos modelos e a combinação da base de resina acrílica + cera apresentou as menores diferenças. Com base nos achados deste estudo, a seguinte escala de reprodutibilidade pode ser estabelecida, do melhor para o pior: base de resina acrílica + cera; placa de resina acrílica + hidrocolóide irreversível; base de resina acrílica + cera + pasta zincoenólica; base de resina acrílica + cera + resina Duralay; e silicona de condensação.

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to evaluate the tensile bond strength of acrylic resins to surface pretreated Cobalt-chromium base metal alloy. A total of 60 tensile bar specimens were prepared. One half of the bar was cast in cobalt-chromium alloy and the other half made of denture base resins attached to the alloy following surface pretreatment. Two denture base resins and five surface pre-treatments were used which included sandblasting, acid etching, use of metal adhesive primers and the combination of the above mentioned modes. Gradual axial loads were applied on the tensile bar specimen mounted on a Hounsfield tensometer till bond failure was evident. Statistical evaluation was done using Mann-Whitney U test. The study results indicate that the bond strength in those specimens wherein a combination of sandblasting, acid etching and priming was done as surface pretreatment, showed the maximum values as compared to the other groups.

ABSTRACT

The rates of alkaline hydrolysis of methyl prop-2-enoic acid [methylacrylate] 1 and methyl-2-methyl-prop-2-enoic acid [methylmethacrylate] 2 were studied at temperatures ranging from 10 to 35 degree in two series of dioxane-water and acetone-water mixtures containing 10 to 75 percent by volume of the organic component. The rate constants were found to be higher in acetone-water mixtures and decreased with increasing the dielectric constant of the medium. The kinetic studies and application of the differential method show that the rate follows a second order kinetic equation, first order with respect to both ester and hydroxide ion and the reaction proceeds by a B[Ac2] mechanism. The distance of closest approach of solvent molecules to the activated complex b and the distance of closest approach of solvent molecules to the transition state G were computed

ABSTRACT

Se han propuesto métodos alternativos de procesamiento de resina para prótesis odontológicas, en el sentido de perfeccionar las técnicas y los resultados de prótesis removibles, sean parciales o totales. En este trabajo, los autores hacen una revisión crítica de la técnica del procesamiento por energía de microondas, en la cual se explican las investigaciones desarrolladas para evaluar los pros y los contras de su uso como método alternativo de polimerización de las resinas para base de prótesis. En este contexto, los autores concluyen que este método, a pesar de ser relativamente reciente, es plausible de ser utilizado en la elaboracíon de trabajos protéticos, por tratarse de una técnica sencilla, limpia y rápida, admitiendo trabajos con calidad equivalente a la de los métodos convencionales

ABSTRACT

Se realizó un estudio de dosificación de radiaciones gamma en la descontaminación parcial de granulados de polimetacrilatos de quinidina y su influencia sobre la estabilidad química de dichos granulados, así como el efecto del envejecimiento de las muestras sobre los resultados microbiológicos obtenidos. Se concluyó que el tratamiento con radiaciones gamma y/o el almacenamiento a largo plazo de los granulados son métodos eficaces para lograr la descontaminación parcial de éstos sin riesgo de afectar su estabilidad química
